LG Washer Error Code UE: What It Means and How to Fix It
The distinction between uE and UE saves unnecessary intervention. Lowercase uE means the LG washer is still working on the balance problem itself; uppercase UE means it has given up and cancelled the spin. Read the display first, then correct the load in 10 to 20 minutes if action is actually required.
What is happening inside the machine
LG washers actively manage spin balance. As the drum begins to rotate, the control senses uneven mass distribution. With uE displayed, it tumbles and redistributes the load, sometimes adding small amounts of water on front load models, in an effort to spread the weight. If those attempts succeed, the spin proceeds. If the load remains gathered on one side, the control cancels the spin and displays UE. The physics are straightforward: a waterlogged blanket or a tight ball of sheets creates one dense sector, so centrifugal force pulls unevenly and the drum wobbles. A very small load can be just as difficult because all its mass travels as one lump. Bulky bedding rolls into a cylinder that cannot flatten itself. Cabinet level influences the threshold because a rocking machine amplifies each rotation. Worn suspension enters the diagnosis only when balanced, mixed loads begin failing repeatedly. This staged response is protective, not indecisive. Waiting during uE allows the machine to solve a transient distribution problem, while acting after UE means giving it a physically different load rather than asking it to repeat the same failed motion.
Finding the cause
Read the case of the code before opening the door
Lowercase uE is a progress report. Wait and let the washer tumble and redistribute; it may recover without help. Uppercase UE is the final result after repeated failure. That distinction prevents two errors: disturbing a machine that was about to recover, and repeatedly restarting one that has already proved the load cannot balance.
Untangle the load completely
When UE is displayed, pause the cycle, wait for the drum to stop and open the door or lid. Pull apart items that have rolled together and spread them evenly around the drum. Sheets are notorious because they wrap other garments into a single heavy package. Surface smoothing is not enough; the internal lump has to be separated.
Fix a single heavy or tiny load
A lone blanket, bath mat or hoodie can dominate the drum. Add a few similar items when care labels permit, or remove the heavy piece and spin it separately at a lower speed. A handful of small items presents the opposite version of the same problem, so add compatible pieces until the load can distribute as separate masses.
Unroll bulky bedding
Duvets and comforters often emerge from the wash as a tight roll. Open the roll out and arrange the bedding loosely around the drum. On a top loader, place items in a ring around the wash plate, with heavier sections distributed around the outside rather than heaped in the centre.
Level the machine after the load is fair
Press opposite top corners and look for rocking. Adjust the feet until the cabinet is solid. A good load on a rocking machine can still fail, while a level test gives a clean answer about whether the problem belongs to the load or the suspension.
Use a balanced repeat test to expose suspension wear
Run a normal mixed load at two thirds to three quarters full. If that load spins smoothly, the original loading was the cause. If everyday loads keep failing after correct loading and levelling, the suspension may no longer control normal wobble, particularly if the empty drum sits low or tilted.
| What you find | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Display shows lowercase uE | The washer is still correcting the imbalance | Wait for the automatic redistribution to finish |
| Display shows uppercase UE and clothes are wet | Correction failed and the spin was cancelled | Untangle and redistribute the load manually |
| Sheets contain a ball of other garments | The load is travelling as one heavy lump | Separate every trapped item and load the sheets loosely |
| One heavy item dominates the drum | There is no comparable mass to balance it | Add similar items or spin the item separately at lower speed |
| Machine rocks at opposite corners | The cabinet is amplifying drum movement | Adjust the feet until it sits solidly |
| Balanced mixed loads fail week after week | Suspension wear is becoming likely | Arrange a professional inspection |
Fixing it
- Wait through uE, several minutes if needed. Let the machine complete its own redistribution attempts before intervening.
- Open and untangle after UE, about 5 minutes. Wait for the drum to stop, separate rolled items and spread the load evenly.
- Correct the load composition, about 3 minutes. Add similar items to a tiny load, or remove a single heavy item for a separate lower speed spin.
- Restart the spin, about 5 to 10 minutes. Select Spin or Rinse and Spin. Watch the ramp-up; a smooth climb to full speed confirms the correction.
- Level the cabinet, about 10 minutes. Adjust the feet until pressing opposite corners produces no rocking, then repeat the balanced spin test if needed.
Reset and clearing
UE clears when a spin completes. There is no button combination reset for UE because the display is reporting a physical load condition. Redistribute the load, restart the spin and judge the result by a smooth ramp to speed.
What it costs
Suspension rods or dampers. Correct loading and levelling are free. Suspension parts become relevant only when fair loads repeatedly fail.
| Route | DIY cost | Part only | Fitted by a service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redistribution and levelling | $0 | No part needed | Not applicable |
| Suspension rods or dampers | Part cost, for a confident repairer | $30 to $90 for a set (estimate) | $220 to $380 fitted by a repair service (estimate) |
All prices on this page are estimates based on typical US parts and service pricing. Your model, region and the actual failed part will move the real figure.
Suspension replacement can be a sound repair on an otherwise healthy washer. If the drum is also scraping, grinding or visibly displaced, ask for a broader mechanical assessment before paying for suspension parts alone. Drain behaviour is covered by the OE guide, and a drum that will not turn is covered by the LE guide.
Mistakes that make it worse
- Restarting without changing the load. The washer has already tried that distribution repeatedly. A manual change is the intervention that matters.
- Interrupting every uE display. Lowercase uE may resolve itself. Opening the machine too early discards the automatic correction already under way.
- Packing the drum to the top. A load with no room to separate cannot redistribute, even when its total weight is within the machine rating.
- Forcing repeated spins on a violent load. The cancellation protects the suspension and bearings. Persistent force works against that protection.
Stop and Call a Professional If
- UE cancels the spin on balanced, mixed loads week after week after the machine is level.
- The drum sits visibly low or tilted with nothing in it.
- You hear scraping, or the drum strikes the cabinet during a spin.
Never work on gas lines, sealed refrigerant systems or inside electrical panels. If anything in this guide conflicts with your model's manual or a safety warning on the machine, the manual and the warning win.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between uE and UE on LG washers?
uE means the washer is actively correcting an imbalance. UE means it tried and failed, and cancelled the spin. Only UE needs you to redistribute the load.
Why do my sheets always cause UE?
Sheets ball up and trap other items inside, forming one heavy lump. Wash sheets with similar sized items, load them loosely, and untangle before the spin if your model allows a pause.
What load size balances best?
A drum about two thirds to three quarters full of mixed, similar weight items balances most reliably.
