Samsung Washer Error Code 5C (5E): What It Means and How to Fix It

Samsung washer guide · Decoded from manufacturer documentation · Safe homeowner checks only

Standing water turns 5C into a water-handling job before it becomes a parts question. Treat it as a drainage restriction until the evidence says otherwise: drain the drum under control, clean the pump filter, and give the hose and standpipe the same suspicion. A careful first pass normally takes 30 to 60 minutes.

What is happening inside the machine

When the control calls for a drain, the electric drain pump draws water from the tub through the pump filter or trap, pushes it through the drain hose and discharges it into the standpipe or laundry sink. A level sensor watches the tub empty. If the level does not fall in the allowed pattern, the control stops the cycle and displays 5C, or 5E on older Samsung models. It will not spin a drum carrying a full load of water, because that weight would be unstable and could damage the suspension. The filter is deliberately placed before the pump to catch coins, buttons, hairpins and lint. That protection also makes it the most common restriction. A hose kink adds resistance after the pump, while a slow house drain creates back pressure at the outlet. An object that slips through can reach the impeller and stop it mechanically. If the passages are clear but the pump makes no sound, the failure becomes electrical. The sequence matters: each test separates a blockage in the machine from a blockage in the house, and both from a pump that can no longer do the work.

Finding the cause

Drain the tub before opening anything

Turn the washer off and unplug it. On a front loader, a full drum holds enough water to flood the floor if the filter cap is released first. Use the small emergency drain tube beside the filter, draining in stages into a shallow tray. This slow step tells you something useful as well: a tube that barely trickles suggests heavy debris around the pump area.

Start with the pump filter

Once the water is controlled, unscrew the filter and clean away lint, coins, buttons and fibrous material. Rugs and pet bedding can load this filter in a single wash. Refit it fully after cleaning. A filter that was packed solid explains the code without any further theory, and the correct response is a test drain rather than a pump purchase.

Inspect the pump housing behind the filter

Shine a light into the empty housing and look for an object that has passed the filter. Check for a coin, screw or underwire near the impeller. Do not force the impeller if it is jammed. An impeller that cannot move points to an obstruction or pump damage; one that turns freely makes a simple jam less likely.

Check the hose and standpipe as one path

Follow the drain hose for kinks and crushed sections. Confirm that only about 4 to 5 inches sits in the standpipe and the joint is not sealed airtight. A hose pushed too deeply or a slow standpipe can make a healthy pump appear weak. On a top loader without a user filter, this external path becomes the first serious check.

Use a bucket test to separate machine from house

Refit the clean filter, place the hose outlet into a bucket, plug the washer in and run Drain and Spin. A strong, steady stream into the bucket proves the machine side can move water. Weak flow keeps suspicion on the filter, pump or hose. Strong flow into the bucket followed by 5C at the standpipe transfers the problem to the household drain.

Listen to the pump with the passages clear

Sound is a useful final divider. A strained or gurgling pump can still be fighting a restriction. Grinding suggests contact with debris or impeller damage. Complete silence during a commanded drain, with filter and hose clear, points to a failed pump or its supply circuit and ends the homeowner stage.

Fixing it

  1. Make the machine safe, about 2 minutes. Switch off and unplug. Lay towels around the front and place a shallow tray under the filter area.
  2. Emergency drain, about 10 to 30 minutes. Use the small tube to empty the tub in stages. Empty the tray as often as needed rather than rushing.
  3. Clean the filter and housing, about 10 minutes. Remove the filter, wash away debris and inspect the housing with a light. Refit the filter until it is secure.
  4. Correct the outlet path, about 10 minutes. Straighten the hose and set its standpipe insertion to about 4 to 5 inches without sealing the opening.
  5. Run a controlled test, about 5 minutes. Plug in and select Drain and Spin. Watch and listen for a strong, steady discharge and confirm that the drum empties.

Reset and clearing

No separate button sequence clears a genuine 5C restriction. Once the tub drains normally, the code clears on the next cycle. Use the emergency drain tube rather than forcing the filter cap against a full drum.

What it costs

Drain pump. Cleaning and hose correction are free. The pump is the usual paid repair when the path is clear and the machine still cannot move water.

RouteDIY costPart onlyFitted by a service
Emergency drain, filter clean and hose correction$0No part neededNot applicable
Drain pumpPart cost, for a confident repairer$30 to $80 for the part (estimate)$200 to $350 fitted by a repair service (estimate)

All prices on this page are estimates based on typical US parts and service pricing. Your model, region and the actual failed part will move the real figure.

A pump replacement is normally a rational repair on a washer that washes and spins well otherwise. Think harder about replacement when the machine also has bearing noise, repeated electronic faults or cabinet corrosion, because those costs can stack quickly. A fill fault belongs to the 4C guide, while a door signal fault belongs to the dC guide and a balance fault to the Ub guide.

Mistakes that make it worse

Stop and Call a Professional If

Never work on gas lines, sealed refrigerant systems or inside electrical panels. If anything in this guide conflicts with your model's manual or a safety warning on the machine, the manual and the warning win.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5C the same as 5E on Samsung washers?

Yes. 5E is the older display version of the same drain fault now shown as 5C. The checks are the same.

Where is the drain filter on my Samsung washer?

On front load models it is behind the small panel at the bottom front corner. Many top load models do not have a user-cleanable filter, so start with the hose and standpipe on those.

Why did 5C appear right after washing a rug or pet bedding?

Bulky, lint-heavy loads shed material that blocks the pump filter quickly. Clean the filter and run an empty hot cycle to flush residue.
