Samsung Washer Error Code Ub (UE): What It Means and How to Fix It
Ub is the washer declining a spin it cannot control. One sodden bath mat can cause it, and so can a drum loaded in a single heap. Correcting the load usually takes 10 to 20 minutes; a machine that fails balanced loads, or fails empty, deserves a different level of attention.
What is happening inside the machine
Before full spin speed, the washer rotates the drum and watches its movement. Wet laundry must spread around the drum so centrifugal force is distributed evenly. If most of the mass gathers on one side, that side pulls outward harder and the drum begins to orbit instead of rotating cleanly. The control slows down, tumbles the load in an attempt to redistribute it and tries again. After repeated failures it displays Ub, or UE on older models, and leaves the clothes wet rather than risk a violent spin. A single heavy item is difficult because there is no comparable mass to place opposite it. Very small loads form one wet ball, while an overfilled drum cannot move enough to rearrange itself. Mixed loads can separate, with heavy towels collecting together. Level matters because a rocking cabinet exaggerates drum movement. Suspension rods or dampers then control the remaining wobble; when they wear, even ordinary loads can exceed the limit. The diagnostic task is to remove load and level variables first, leaving an empty or carefully balanced test to expose a machine fault.
Finding the cause
Break up the load by hand
Pause the cycle, wait for the drum to stop and separate the items. Spread them evenly around the drum rather than leaving a compact mass. If the clothes have rolled into one rope or ball, the washer's own tumbling has already shown it cannot undo that arrangement. A successful spin after manual redistribution identifies loading as the cause.
Correct the single heavy item problem
A bath mat, blanket or pair of heavy jeans absorbs a large amount of water and lands as one dense lump. Add two or three items of similar weight when the fabric care allows, or run the heavy item separately at a medium spin speed. High spin does not solve the imbalance; it makes the forces greater.
Bring the load back into the workable range
Too little laundry clumps, and too much cannot move. Aim for a drum about three quarters full, loosely loaded. If the drum is packed to the door, remove items. If it holds only a few pieces, add compatible items or accept a slower separate spin for that small load.
Separate the heavy and light mix
Heavy towels washed with light synthetics often sort themselves during agitation, leaving the dense pieces together. Rebalance them deliberately around the drum before restarting. Repeated trouble with the same combination is a loading pattern problem, not evidence that the sensor has become oversensitive.
Level the cabinet before judging the drum
Push down on opposite top corners. Any rocking gives the drum a moving foundation. Adjust the front feet until the cabinet sits solidly and tighten the lock nuts. A machine that walks or knocks on a level floor with a balanced load is giving a stronger mechanical warning than one that simply rocks on its feet.
Use repeat behaviour to identify suspension wear
The key pattern is repetition under fair conditions. Balanced everyday loads that trip Ub again and again suggest worn suspension. A drum that sags to one side when empty, scraping sounds or cabinet strikes during moderate spin move the diagnosis firmly into repair territory.
| What you find | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| One heavy item sits alone | There is no counterweight for its waterlogged mass | Add similar items or spin it separately at medium speed |
| Load is rolled into one ball | Automatic redistribution has failed | Untangle and spread it manually around the drum |
| Machine rocks at the corners | The cabinet is amplifying drum movement | Level the feet and tighten the lock nuts |
| Balanced load spins smoothly after correction | The fault was load distribution | Finish with Drain and Spin and keep the loading change |
| Normal loads fail repeatedly | Suspension control may be worn | Arrange a suspension inspection |
| Ub appears with an empty drum | The load cannot explain the reading | Book a repair for level, sensor or suspension faults |
Fixing it
- Stop and open safely, about 2 minutes. Pause the cycle and wait until the drum is stationary before reaching in.
- Redistribute, about 5 minutes. Pull the load apart and place items evenly around the drum. For a top loader, arrange them around the agitator or wash plate.
- Correct the load size, about 3 minutes. Add comparable items to a tiny load or remove items from an overfull drum.
- Choose the spin deliberately, about 1 minute. Use medium speed for blankets and bath mats. Run Drain and Spin, or Rinse and Spin, and watch the first minute.
- Level the machine, about 10 minutes. Adjust the front feet until opposite corners no longer rock. Tighten the lock nuts and repeat the spin test.
Reset and clearing
Ub clears when a spin completes in balance. No unplug reset is normally needed. If the display stays stuck after a successful spin, switch the power off for 1 minute and restart.
What it costs
Suspension rods on top load models, or a damper set on front load models. Load correction and levelling are free; worn suspension is the usual paid repair.
| Route | DIY cost | Part only | Fitted by a service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redistribution and levelling | $0 | No part needed | Not applicable |
| Suspension rods or damper set | Part cost, for a confident repairer | $30 to $90 for a set (estimate) | $220 to $380 fitted by a repair service (estimate) |
All prices on this page are estimates based on typical US parts and service pricing. Your model, region and the actual failed part will move the real figure.
Suspension work is often worthwhile on a machine that is quiet and watertight otherwise. Replacement becomes more attractive when suspension wear is paired with bearing roar, drum damage or repeated cabinet impact. A fill fault belongs to the 4C guide, a drain fault to the 5C guide and a door signal fault to the dC guide.
Mistakes that make it worse
- Restarting the identical load. Another attempt rarely changes the physics. The same mass returns to the same side and the washer stops again.
- Selecting the highest spin for a heavy single item. More speed means more force from the imbalance, not a better chance of pushing through it.
- Overfilling to add balance. A drum with no room to rearrange cannot redistribute. Loose space is part of the balancing system.
- Holding the machine still by force. Bracing a walking washer hides a level or suspension problem and does nothing to protect the drum and bearings.
Stop and Call a Professional If
- Ub trips repeatedly on balanced, everyday loads after levelling.
- The drum visibly sags to one side when empty.
- You hear scraping, or the drum strikes the cabinet during a moderate spin.
Never work on gas lines, sealed refrigerant systems or inside electrical panels. If anything in this guide conflicts with your model's manual or a safety warning on the machine, the manual and the warning win.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ub the same as UE on Samsung washers?
Yes. UE is the older display form and Ub is the current one. Both mean an unbalanced load stopped the spin.
Why does my washer show Ub with an empty drum?
An empty drum should never be unbalanced. If Ub appears with nothing in it, suspect a level problem, a sensor fault or suspension damage, and book a repair.
Can an unbalanced load damage the washer?
Yes, repeated violent spinning can damage the suspension, drum bearings and even the floor. The Ub stop exists to prevent exactly that.
