Whirlpool Washer Error Code F21: What It Means and How to Fix It

Whirlpool washer guide · Decoded from manufacturer documentation · Safe homeowner checks only

F21 means Whirlpool's washer began a drain and then ran out of patience. The tub still holds water, the door may stay locked, and the spin will not start. A trap clean and an external drain test usually reveal the location of the restriction within 30 to 45 minutes.

What is happening inside the machine

Whirlpool's drain system is supervised by timing and level. When the pump starts, the control uses the pressure or level switch to confirm that the tub is emptying. On Cabrio top load models and Duet front load models, an F21 appears when that confirmation does not arrive within roughly the expected several minutes. The pump may still be running; the issue is that water is not leaving at the required rate. Most restrictions sit before or inside the pump trap, where coins, lint and small garments collect. A kinked hose or slow standpipe restricts the other side of the pump. A partly clogged trap can permit slow seepage while still failing the timed test, which explains cycles that work occasionally and fail with larger water volumes. If the path is clear, the pump impeller may be damaged or the pump may not be receiving power. The level switch is a later suspect because it reports the result of drainage rather than causing the restriction. A bucket test is especially valuable here: strong discharge into a bucket separates a healthy machine-side pump from a household drain that cannot accept the flow.

Finding the cause

Respect the locked door and prepare for water

The door may remain locked because the tub is full. Do not force it. Switch off and unplug the washer, lay a towel and place a shallow pan at the bottom front. Front load traps sit behind a lower panel or small door; some top load models route pump access differently, so use the trap location as the first practical step only where fitted.

Clean the pump trap slowly

Loosen the trap a quarter turn at a time and let water escape into the pan in stages. Once drained, remove the trap fully and clean it. Coins, buttons, lint mats and small socks are common findings. A trap cleaned every 3 to 6 months rarely reaches the point of an F21, so a packed trap is both diagnosis and maintenance lesson.

Inspect the trap housing and impeller area

Look into the housing for objects that passed the trap or lodged near the impeller. A sock or underwire can allow the pump to sound busy while moving little water. Remove only loose items that are safely reachable. If the impeller is visibly damaged or will not move, the pump itself has become the likely repair.

Straighten the drain hose completely

Trace the hose from the machine to the standpipe. Washers are frequently pushed back onto their own drain hose, creating a flat section that behaves like a closed valve. Restore the hose to a smooth route. Also confirm that the outlet is not sealed into the standpipe and the end is not inserted excessively.

Run the bucket separation test

Refit the trap, place the hose into a bucket and run Drain and Spin. Strong flow proves the pump and machine-side path. Weak flow keeps the fault in the trap, pump or hose. Strong bucket flow followed by failure at the standpipe points to the house drain, particularly if other fixtures drain slowly or the standpipe overflows.

Listen once the passages are clear

A working pump should produce a consistent sound and visible discharge. Grinding suggests debris or impeller damage. Silence during a commanded drain, after the trap and hose are clear, suggests a failed pump or its electrical supply. At that point repeated restarts provide no new evidence.

Fixing it

  1. Prepare for controlled water release, about 5 minutes. Switch off, unplug and position towels and a shallow pan at the trap area.
  2. Drain and clean the trap, about 15 to 30 minutes. Loosen it in small stages, empty the pan as needed, remove all debris and refit the trap securely.
  3. Correct the hose path, about 10 minutes. Remove kinks and crushed sections, and leave clearance behind the washer.
  4. Test into the normal drain, about 5 minutes. Plug in, select Drain and Spin and watch the full discharge. Pause or Cancel clears the displayed fault once the drain succeeds.
  5. Separate the house drain if needed, about 10 minutes. Repeat into a bucket. Strong flow means the next job belongs to the standpipe, not the washer.

Reset and clearing

Press Pause/Cancel to clear the control after the obstruction is removed, then run Drain and Spin. A successful drain resets the level report and releases the door. Older models show the same fault as F02, and the same trap, hose and standpipe checks apply.

What it costs

Drain pump. Trap cleaning and hose correction are free. The pump is the usual part when the passage is clear but discharge remains weak or absent.

All prices on this page are estimates based on typical US parts and service pricing. Your model, region and the actual failed part will move the real figure.

A pump is normally a worthwhile repair on a washer that fills, washes and spins properly otherwise. If the trap area shows extensive corrosion or the tub leaks independently, ask whether those repairs change the value of proceeding. For water that will not enter at all, use the F20 guide.

Mistakes that make it worse

Stop and Call a Professional If

Never work on gas lines, sealed refrigerant systems or inside electrical panels. If anything in this guide conflicts with your model's manual or a safety warning on the machine, the manual and the warning win.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does F21 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

F21 is a long drain fault: the washer started draining but the water level did not drop as expected within several minutes.

Why is the door locked with F21 showing?

The washer keeps the door locked while the tub still holds water, for safety. Drain the tub using the pump trap area and the level drops enough for the lock to release.

Is F02 the same fault as F21?

On older Whirlpool models F02 was the long drain code. F21 is the current equivalent with the same checks.
