Whirlpool Washer Error Codes: The Full List

Whirlpool washers, including the Duet and later front load families, report faults as F codes, often shown alternating with the remaining cycle time. Most F codes describe a condition the control measured, like a drain that took too long, rather than naming a broken part directly. Start with the meaning, then the guide.

Before You Call Anyone

Whirlpool front loaders hide their most useful service part in plain sight: the drain pump filter trap. It is behind the lower front on most models and it explains the majority of F21 faults and a good share of drain smells. Clean it before you suspect the pump, and keep a shallow pan ready, the trap holds water even in an empty-feeling tub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does F21 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

F21 is a long drain fault: the control expected an empty tub and did not get one in time. Clean the pump filter trap first, then check the hose and standpipe.

Why does my Whirlpool flash F and then a number alternately?

The display alternates between the fault code and other information such as remaining time. The F number is the code to look up here.

Are Whirlpool and Kenmore codes the same?

Many Kenmore front loaders were built by Whirlpool and use the same F code system, including F21 for long drain. Check the model plate to confirm the maker.
