Samsung Washer Error Code SUD: What It Means and How to Fix It
Foam becomes a mechanical problem when it starts misleading the controls. SUD is Samsung's washer protecting its level sensing and pump while it waits for an overdose to subside. The routine can take 30 minutes or more; the lasting fix is a ten minute reset of detergent type, dose and residue.
What is happening inside the machine
A Samsung washer estimates water level through pressure sensing. Air and water behaviour in the sensing path change as foam builds, so a deep suds layer can make the control believe conditions in the drum are abnormal. Foam can also be drawn toward the pump and interfere with clean drainage. When the control decides the suds level is too high, it displays SUD, Sd or 5d depending on model, pauses the wash and starts a suds reduction routine. The machine drains, tumbles gently and waits while bubbles collapse. It resumes only when the sensed level returns to a range it trusts. That waiting period explains the apparently inactive display. The cause is usually chemical rather than mechanical: too much detergent, non-HE detergent in a low-water machine, two pods, or residue accumulated in the drum and drawer. A restricted drain can prolong the event because soapy water leaves slowly. If SUD occurs with no detergent in the load, residue, drainage and the pressure sensor hose become relevant. Repeated events matter because lingering detergent builds deposits in the drum, hoses and seals, making future sensing and drain faults more likely.
Finding the cause
Let the routine finish before judging it
A paused cycle with SUD is not automatically stuck. The machine may sit with little visible action while foam breaks down. Switching off usually preserves the problem and makes the next start detect the same suds. Let the routine complete and note whether the wash resumes. Completion confirms that the protection worked; the remaining task is preventing the next overdose.
Audit the detergent before touching the machine
Check whether the detergent is HE and reconstruct the actual dose. For a normal load, about 2 tablespoons of HE detergent is often plenty, with up to twice that only for genuinely heavy soil. The maximum line in the drawer is a ceiling for extreme cases, not a routine target. Two pods are a double dose because one pod is already measured for a load.
Look for residue that can foam again
Pull out the detergent drawer and rinse away crust under a tap. Wipe the drawer cavity. Residue in the drum can also release suds during a later rinse, particularly when clothes feel stiff or filmy or the drum smells musty. A no-detergent rinse and the machine's self-clean cycle separate stored residue from a fresh dosing error.
Check drainage when SUD appears without detergent
No-detergent SUD changes the diagnosis. A pump filter filling with lint and objects can slow the exit of soapy water, allowing foam to linger and the sensor to keep reporting suds. Drain safely, clean the filter and test the strength of drainage. This is also where a related 5C drain fault may be developing.
Use repetition to identify a sensing fault
When dosing is correct, the drum and drawer are clean, the filter is clear and drainage is strong, a partly blocked pressure sensor hose can misread the level. That component is inside the machine. Repetition under controlled conditions is the evidence that moves SUD from a detergent lesson to a service diagnosis.
| What you find | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Foam fills the door glass after a large dose | The detergent load exceeds the water volume | Let the routine finish, then rinse with no detergent |
| Non-HE detergent was used | Its foam formula is mismatched to an HE machine | Flush the load and switch to measured HE detergent |
| SUD appears with no detergent added | Residue, drainage restriction or sensor misreading is likely | Clean the drawer and pump filter, then run self-clean |
| Drainage is slow as well as sudsy | Foam is lingering because water cannot leave freely | Follow the drain checks before blaming the sensor |
| Every load trips despite correct dosing and cleaning | The pressure sensor hose may be partly blocked | Call a professional |
Fixing it
- Wait out the protection routine, commonly 30 minutes or more. Do not switch off and do not try to force a front load door while the drum is full. Let the machine drain, tumble and resume.
- Flush the foam, about 15 to 30 minutes. Run Rinse and Spin with no detergent. Use the same load if it still feels soapy, or run it empty if the clothes have been removed after completion.
- Clean the detergent path, about 10 minutes. Remove and rinse the drawer, then wipe its cavity so old crust cannot feed the next wash.
- Set the new dose, under 1 minute. Use HE detergent only, about 2 tablespoons for a normal load and one pod per load, never two.
- Clean the filter when the pattern points there, about 15 minutes. Use a shallow tray and towel, drain safely, remove debris and refit the filter.
- Strip drum residue, one self-clean cycle. Run the machine's self-clean programme with no detergent when SUD has appeared without a fresh dose.
Reset and clearing
There is nothing to reset. SUD clears itself when the suds level falls and the routine completes, after which the wash continues. Power cycling does not remove foam; it makes the washer detect the same condition and begin the wait again. Time and rinsing are the fix.
What it costs
Usually, no part at all. Correct dosing, rinsing and cleaning resolve the overwhelming majority of SUD events. The pressure sensor is the rare paid endpoint when controlled tests keep failing. Whirlpool reports the same suds idea as Sd, covered in the Whirlpool washer hub.
| Route | DIY cost | Part only | Fitted by a service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct dosing, rinse and drawer clean | $0 | No part needed | Not applicable |
| Pressure sensor fault, rare | Internal diagnosis is not a normal homeowner step | Model-specific; the current repair figure is quoted fitted | $120 to $220 fitted by a repair service (estimate) |
All prices on this page are estimates based on typical US parts and service pricing. Your model, region and the actual failed part will move the real figure.
Paying for service before correcting dose and residue is rarely sensible, because a new sensor will still be exposed to the same foam conditions. Once those are controlled, a repeat fault gives the service visit a clear and testable target.
Mistakes that make it worse
- Switching the machine off to clear the display. The foam remains in the drum, so the next start simply finds it again and extends the total delay.
- Adding detergent to a load that already feels soapy. More surfactant creates more foam and more residue, the opposite of a rinse correction.
- Doubling pods for a dirty load. Pod count is dose count. Two pods do not target dirt selectively; they double the chemical load.
- Treating the drawer maximum as the standard dose. That line is an upper limit. Routine use at the limit is how residue builds until SUD appears.
Stop and Call a Professional If
- SUD appears on every load even with measured HE detergent and a cleaned drum, drawer and pump filter: the pressure sensor hose may be partly blocked.
- You smell burning or notice the machine overheating.
- Water is leaking from the machine while the suds routine runs.
Never work on gas lines, sealed refrigerant systems or inside electrical panels. If anything in this guide conflicts with your model's manual or a safety warning on the machine, the manual and the warning win.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SUD mean on a Samsung washer?
SUD means the washer has detected too many suds in the drum. It is not an error in the broken-part sense: the machine pauses the cycle and runs a suds reduction routine, draining and tumbling until the foam level drops, then carries on.
How long does the Samsung suds reduction routine take?
Longer than most people expect. Depending on how much foam has to clear, the pause commonly runs 30 minutes and can stretch beyond that with a badly overdosed load. The display may sit on SUD with little visible action while the machine works the foam down.
Why does my Samsung washer show SUD when I used no detergent?
SUD with an empty-detergent load points at the sensing side instead: a restricted drain or clogged pump filter makes foam and water linger, detergent residue built up in the drum foams again, or the pressure sensor hose is partly blocked and misreads the level. Check the drain filter first.
